Each May for the past 32 years, before the start of Cape Ann’s summer season, serious international and American art collectors journey to Rockport. What draws these art lovers each year? The Rockport Art Association & Museum’s (RAA&M) Annual Auction. This Saturday, May 5th, marks the 33rd year of this prestigious auction and like so many art lovers, and close neighbors, to the RAA&M, we can’t wait.
At Feather & Wedge we are enormously proud to be across the street from the RAA&M. (Did you read our blog from earlier this year?) The RAA&M one of the oldest and most active art associations in the country. Founded in 1921, the association’s membership now includes 300 or so exhibiting members, along with hundreds of contributing members. They are open year-round, with excellent art programs including workshops, classes, lectures, and community outreach. In addition to promoting art education, the RAA&M has an impressive museum collection.
The support needed to fund the RAA&M’s impressive programs and collection is provided in no small part by the annual auction now in its 33rd year. The auction began with a bequest by founding RAA&M member Antonio Cirino (1888-1983). Cirino left his artwork to the association with the stipulation that the art be auctioned to help support the organization. The auction quickly evolved to include other historic Cape Ann artists, and has been the Association’s major annual fundraising event ever since.
The auction features over 200 lots featuring masterworks by historic Cape Ann artists including Aldro T. Hibbard, Anthony Thieme, Emile Gruppé, Charles Paul Gruppé, W. Lester Stevens, Antonio Cirino, Paul Strisik, Emma Fordyce MacRae, Jane Peterson, Max Kuehne, Al Czerepak, Bernard Corey, Don Stone, and Charles Movalli, among many others. Edward A. Page and Nathaniel L. Berry, renowned Lynn Beach Painters, are also featured. View the view auction catalogue.
Bidding will take place live at the auction in the RAA&M’s Hibbard Gallery beginning at 2PM. Interested bidders should consider attending the reception the night before from Friday, May 4th from 5 to 7 PM.
You may also bid online via www.LiveAuctioneers.com (with advanced registration), or by submitting an absentee bid with the RAA&M in advance but we recommend coming in person if you possibly can.
